Our Mission

Our mission is to promote the interests of all public school children in our community.  All students in our public schools deserve the best education to prepare them for 21st century global competition. Our grassroots movement aims to bring the focus back to what’s important -- ensuring our children receive the best public education possible and finding peace in our community.

Our Platform

We are committed to:
  • Promoting public education as the number one priority in our community
  • Achieving peace and fairness in our school community through civil, fact-based dialogue
  • Promoting fiscal responsibility and transparency
Our Background
  • We are a grassroots community group made up of a collection of community members and parents. We support fiscal responsibility, accuracy and civil dialogue.
  • We endorse public school-related issues involving long-term public school solutions in our community.
  • We are committed to balanced leadership for all public school children.
  • We advocate for issues that promote sound fiscal decisions.

Board of Directors

  • Rob Fagen, President.  Rob grew up in Arizona and has lived in the Bay Area since college. He and his family have lived in Los Altos since 2003. He's an engineering manager at a local education services company. He believes that the best way to find good solutions is to get all the relevant information on the table and then have a transparent dialog focused on fitting a solution to the available data.

  • David Roode, Vice President.  David grew up and attended public schools in Maryland, Pennsylvania, California, Texas and Ohio.  He came to the Bay Area to attend college and has lived in Mountain View and Los Altos for 35 years.  He's been an IT and engineering infrastructure manager for several Silicon Valley  tech companies with a background in capacity planning and resource management for cost effectiveness.

  • Jill Jene, Secretary Treasurer.  Jill comes from a family of educators (teachers and principals) and value high quality public education for every kid.  Jill attended graduate school at Northwestern University and earned both a Masters and a PhD in Chemistry and earned an MBA from DePaul University. Jill and her husband moved to Los Altos almost 10 years ago because of the high quality public school options for their two children. Jill works full time for a specialty pharmaceutical company as the Vice President of Business Development.

Why "Each Student Counts"?

Every student in our local educational system deserves a leadership team that makes good decisions on their behalf, and makes those decisions in a fiscally responsible way.

What Do You Hope To Accomplish?

Our goals are to:
  • Advocate for restoring balance, respect and cost effectiveness to this indispensable community resource.
  • Bring strong leadership to this public trust
  • Support fiscal responsibility

How Do You Expect To Accomplish Your Goals?

In the coming weeks and months, we will be sharing information and providing specifics about failed leadership and fiscal irresponsibility on the part of the LASD Trustees. Then, it's up to you to engage with them and guide them towards satisfying you, the public.  We would like to help discover positive alternatives for improvement.

What Factors Are Important in Achieving Your Goals?

Among the aspects that we find to be important are:

  • Paying attention to the changing needs of students in preparation to participate in the world of the 21st Century, with an economy and society that is increasingly global.
  • Encouraging transparency and innovation in the operation  of the schools.

How Are You Organized?

Each Student Counts is a 501(c)(4) not-for-profit corporation. We are organized to promote the general welfare of our community, focused on the educational opportunities for our children. While we are not-for-profit, donations to us are not tax deductible.
